Local Procedures For Medication Administration In School

1. Parent consent must be obtained before any medication, over-the-counter or prescription, is given unless the student is 18 years old. Physician order must accompany parent consent for all prescription medications, without exception. These orders may be faxed to school if necessary. Click the attachment below for the form.

2. Appropriately trained staff, under the direction of the School Nurse, will be responsible for administration.

3. All attempts will be made to honor time requested. If specified at noon, will be given at meal time. This will vary per grade.

4. Prescriptions to be given three times a day will not be given unless specifically ordered every 8 hours and with Physician order.

5. If over-the-counter medications are given frequently, parents will be asked to send own supply. School supplied medications are for emergency use, not for daily distribution.

6. School supplied medications are: Tylenol, Ibuproben, cough drops, generic decongestant, benadryl, Tums or Rolaids and an albuterol inhaler (for breathing emergencies, we also have nebulizer, for anaphalactic reactions, epi-pen).
